Paranormal Phenomena & Clinical Practice: Experiences in Counseling
Paranormal experiences (regardless whether real or imaginary) are human experiences and as such always to be taken seriously. Everyone can have such an experience - some people have them only once or twice in a lifetime while others might have them frequently. However, sometimes these experiences can influence psychological functioning in a negative way. Thus, paranormal experiences (whether real or not) are to be taken serious by psychologists and psychotherapists.
In a more general view, instead of “Paranormal Experiences” the term “Exceptional Human Experiences” is used.
These experiences are not (not necessarily) an indication of insanity but might be an indication of emotional problems.
The model used in counselling of EHE cases in the Netherlands is based on the Rogerian (client centered) therapy model, by using the experiences of the client as the nucleus.
The experiences of the “Parapsychologisch Adviesbureau” in Utrecht, founded by Wim Cramer in 1986 and headed by him for several years, are discussed by presentation of a few case studies.
